The Bellefontaine terrace has an outdated charm, an odd location — perched atop the slab of a car park — and a very small attendance. Plants are contained and monitored. Inversion offers a little physical and mental experience for visitors: what if we switched roles? What if we gave room, time and space to the vegetation? Here, the users’ place and activities are upturned. On this sterile surface, with no real soil, prominence is given to plants. Visitors give way to, relax and watch this revival, just for the summer.
21b
When car park users in Bellefontaine go to the machine to pay for their ticket, they see roots emerging from the ceiling above them. Where could they be coming from? Up there on the roof, trees, shrubs and perennial plants grow. Yes, they grow in the little amount of soil they have been granted. For this specific tree, things have gone on for long enough. The need for water and nutrients in the depths is stronger, the tree is reclaiming its rights. These roots are evidence of a garden: they invite us to discover what is happening above.
